Richmonder on mission became Cambodian girl's ticket for life.
In a tiny hamlet in Cambodia, not far from the killing fields of an old war that continues to maim and murder,4 year old Charya You found a ticket to life. Born with a hole in her heart, Charya had little chance of living. But hope took root last spring at an orphanage in Sihanoukville.
Charya's Mom took her to a makeshift clinic set up by a medical team from Richmond. But her heart problems were too complicated for Cambodia's primitive medical system, or for the team to provide in the field. Bev. Gibson who was on this mission of mercy knew she had to do something more. That night, she sat down with Cathleen Jones who runs the orphanage there. "We talked about it" Gibson said. "And we made a decision to try to make it happen." Sixteen months later, after countless frustrations, they had transcended a complicated bureaucracy and successfully battled a near fatal health crisis, Charya arrived from Cambodia and Gibson's long sought goal was now within reach.
Gibson has a history of looking at the world around her and the need, and saying."What can I do to make a difference?"
Miracles became abundant for the 5 yr. old Cambodian child. After a very successful surgery. Gibson escorted Charya You home, for the first time in this child's life her parents saw their little girl run and play. "Charya is a perfect example, "Gibson said." Her family was told, you have no hope for your daughter here in Cambodia, and she will die. "Well, here we are, making the step, taking the risk. Now this family has hope again and Charya has a chance to dream of a future." Gibson replied.
